Gentle movement to music for the over sixties and less able people
Christmas Meal: 9th December 2014 St Athan and Rhoose classes came together on Tuesday 9th December to share a Christmas meal before breaking for the Christmas holidays. We shared a great meal with carol singing and laughter at St Athan Golf club. It is hoped to hold more social events throughout the year.
HINTS & TIPS: As we continue to expand, I would like to share hints and tips in this section.
At each class, I provide pamphlets from Arthritis UK and Diabetic Society (free of charge). These pamphlets give clients lots of information regarding everyday living and useful exercises that will help to keep you mobile. If you have access to the internet, you may find the web links on the contact page useful.
Extend: One year on!
On 3rd February 2015 the St Athan class celebrated one year of extending. When I first started this class, on 4th February 2014, I was full of trepidation. Would anyone come, would they enjoy it and would it last? Well I am pleased to say all those worries have been allayed. Out of the first 7 participants 4 are still with me and there are 12 more regulars. Over the year some have tried the class and moved on for various reasons. As with all new ventures it does not suit all tastes. However, I am happy to report that the class has a wonderful core of extenders who are feeling the benefits of the gentle exercise and movement not to mention the fun element. You have to have a certain sense of fun to play with pom poms and octabands! The socialising afterwards and the Christmas lunch give everyone a chance to make new friends and tackle any feelings of isolation.
As we move on into the second year I hope that more people will join us and enjoy the benefits of EXTEND.
I couldn’t have achieved this first year without the support of Sharon Evans at the Gathering
Place for being so generous in her support and in particular, Alan who is a volunteer and always opens up and closes the class, in addition to setting up the chairs & tables tirelessly every week. My thanks also go to Cynthia who not only attends the class, but does the refreshments every week. Howard and Marianne who help by getting out the equipment and putting it away too! The class can only succeed with a great team and that is what is behind the successful first year at St Athan.
My thanks go to Simon Jones Disability Sports Officer for the Vale of Glamorgan Council who supported my bid for community chest funding and was also able to ensure great coverage in the local newspaper to show the class celebrating the first year anniversary.
Also I would like to say a very big Thank you to Kirsty Stuart for taking such great photos of the event. Check out her face book page for more super photos: <https://www.facebook.com/kdsphotography3865?fref=ts>
Fit for Life Event: The Gathering Place
Extend in the Vale: The Gathering Place, St Athan class with 'fit for Life' will be celebrating older Peoples Day on Tuesday 29th September 2015 between 2 and 3:30 PM. Exercise and dance to Cliff Richards, celebrating his 75th birthday year with some of his 57 musical greats. Dress in 60s style (optional). Half price class plus free nibbles and refreshments.
Class numbers remain steady and therefore classes will continue until Christmas; further review for January 2016 will follow.
Extenders enjoyed a summer lunch at St Athan Golf Club on Tuesday 21st july. A raffle was held and £74 was raised for Help for Heroes and RAFA. Many thanks for all the support given by members.
